Nine new public charter schools have opened in Maryland this school year, bringing the state-wide total to 42. Maryland charter schools now serve nearly 11,500 students in five counties and Baltimore City.  Though charter
schools have grown across the state, over 3,000 students are on waiting lists for charter school seats.

MCSN announces the release of the third edition of the Maryland Charter School Founders' Manual. The manual covers the basics of strategic planning, writing charter school applications, fundraising, governance and choosing and education plan. The third edition includes a new chapter on High Quality Charter Schools: Creating and Operating an Excellent School. The manual can be downloaded for free under Resources.

MCSN announces that Baltimore Freedom Academy, a Maryland public charter high school was among the nation's Best High Schools 2008, according to a comprehensive survey released by U.S. News and World Reports.

MCSN announces 6th Annual Maryland Charter School Conference will be on November 13-14, 2008. The Keynote address will be from Kevin P. Chavous, Esq., Sonnenschein, Nath & Rosenthal LLP.  Mr. Chavous is a leading advocate for school choice and former member of the Council of the District of Columbia and Chair of the Council's Committee on Education, Libraries and Recreation.
